I received my tentative offer with National Park Service and completed and sent in my OF 306 Form, one month ago. I have already ordered my uniform and my start date is very soon. Just yesterday, I did fingerprints and enrollment at a credentialing location and my SF 85 has been sent to my security specialist. I don't think that my SF 85 has been sent to OPM yet, as I just did my fingerprints yesterday and my security specialist was not in the office. I am just realizing now that I make a mistake on the OF 306 form that I think will come up during the background investigation. Is this OF 306 form also sent to OPM along with the SF 85? The mistake is this:

Question 9 During the last 7 years, have you been convicted, been imprisoned, been on probation, or been on parole? I answered no. 5 years ago, I was arrested for criminal trespassing, went to court, and the final outcome was that I agreed to complete a deferred disposition (community service and pay a fine). After completion, all convictions were dropped and the case was dismissed. I am now realizing, after doing some research, that a deferred disposition is pretty much the same thing as being put on probation. When I answered no to this question, it was not my intention to lie or withhold information. It was simply my own misunderstanding of legal definitions and what happened with my case 5 years ago. It did not ask me anything about convictions or arrests in the SF 85. Now that the background investigation is about to start, I am not sure what I should do to fix this.

I have heard that the investigator may call, and ask for more information and I will have another chance to explain. But since this is not a security clearance, it is just a low-risk public trust, I have also heard that they do not do interviews with the investigator, and they will just communicate in written form. How likely is it that they will just contact me and withdraw the job offer right away without allowing me to explain? Is it possible to fix the mistake on the form by filling out another one? Should I contact them and explain I made a mistake and if so, should I contact my HR representative or my security specialist or OPM directly? HR is the one that sent it to me in the first place. Or will this just make things more complicated and I should just wait for them to contact me? Does anyone have experience or knowledge with this whole process? This job is extremely important to me and I will do anything to make sure I get my official job offer.

Start with your HR folks and see what they say. The 306 is forwarded to OPM along with your eQip/SCA/SF85P (how ever you know the form).

The single misdemeanor may or may not trigger an interview. If it does, volunteer the information when asked if there are any changes to your responses.
*DISCLAIMER*Correctly filling out your security forms will not guarantee you a clearance in 3 months BUT be sloppy and your case will be in the field a heck of a lot longer, guaranteed.
